Mikrosam, а leader in innovative composites manufacturing equipment and software in over 40 countries throughout Europe, Asia and South America, is entering into partnership with Composite Automation LLC, to bring its cutting-edge solutions to the North American Market. With the growth in advanced composite parts production, the need for sophisticated fiber placement and tape laying (AFP/ATL) systems in the North American market has never been greater.

“John Melilli and Composite Automation LLC have built a winning team to represent us on the North American market. Each team member has individually distinguished himself in the composite manufacturing industry. As a unit, they offer unrivaled expertise in a wide range of applications. We are very excited to have this dynamic sales force representing Mikrosam’s composites manufacturing solutions as we expand across the U.S., and now in Canada too. CAMX visitors are welcomed to meet Mikrosam and Composite Automation team at booth B27, said Samoil Samak, Mikrosam’s Vice President.

This Fall Mikrosam invested over USD 2.3 million in an advanced composites R&D and customer solution center. The center is fully equipped with Mikrosam’s latest suite of composites solutions including test panel manufacturing and testing, filament winding machine, multi-head AFP/ATL robotic machine, prepreg making machine, slitting and rewinding machine and Mikrosam’s Mikroplace software demo and training center. The multi-head AFP/ATL robotic machine is configured to layup thermoplastic tape and tows, thermoset towpreg, and dry tape in widths from 1/8’’ up to 12’’. The modern thermoplastic ATL head is equipped with laser heating for temperature control of the insitu-consolidation process. The thermoset AFP head is equipped with an infrared heating unit. Mikrosam’s customers can perform prototyping, testing, product design, technology development and can receive the necessary expertise to meet their specific composites manufacturing automation challenges.

I am delighted to collaborate with Mikrosam, bringing a wealth of expertise to the field of composites manufacturing. We want to emphasize that Mikrosam provides the leading-edge technologies for automated placement of thermoset and thermoplastic fibers and tape using both advanced robotics and gantry systems. Since opening the customer solution center, we have already had 3 groups visit from North America who have confirmed the advanced level of performance they saw at Mikrosam’s customer center. I saw the system performing on various flat, highly contoured, open and closed surfaces. The equipment produced small and medium sized lightweight composite parts in front of our eyes.  Mikrosam’s machines can solve many of the challenges facing today’s composites manufacturers.  We are excited to contribute to Mikrosam’s growing business here in North America and welcome interested parties to visit their advanced R&D customer solution center.” said John Mellili, President of Composite Automation, LLC.

Meet the Composite Automation LLC Sales Team

John Melilli (John@compositeautomation.com)

Based near Philadelphia, with over 30 years of mechanical, electrical and industrial automation experience, John has worked across a broad spectrum of industries – from food to pharma, and beyond. John understands that the composites industry faces the same challenges as other industries: to increase throughput, reduce waste, and maximize quality, while keeping a sharp eye on cost. Specializing in composite part manufacturing since 2004, John is mindful of these goals, and knows that to be successful, he needs to help customers achieve them. John’s technical insight includes not just an understanding of the systems that Composite Automation represents, but more importantly the common composites manufacturing issues prevalent in the industry. He brings extensive experience applying custom capital equipment for the manufacture of composite parts such as automated fiber placement, automated tape placement, pick and place, filament winders, drum winder, laser templating, ultrasonic cutters and custom automation solutions.

Peter Richer, P.Eng (Peter@compositeautomation.com)

Located in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, Peter manages the Composite Automation sales operations for Canada and Europe.  Peter is fluent in English and French with conversational German, and specializes in helping customers improve their composite manufacturing processes, wherever they are located. Peter brings over 30 years of experience in aerospace and composites to the Composite Automation team. He engages in consultative, solution-selling of complex capital equipment. An ability to understand the situation or problem, both technically and commercially, and its implications, leads him to an optimized solution. Identifying the ROI by understanding the cost of the problem is one of Peter’s unique skills.

Duncan Cooper (Duncan@compositeautomation.com)

Duncan is located in Massachusetts After graduating from Weber State College, Hale, Duncan began his career as an application engineer in the Automotive, Aerospace, and Plastics Industries. Switching his focus to manufacturing permitted Duncan to gain valuable operational expertise in plastics, composites and metalworking. With hands-on Operations Management experience, Duncan brings keen insight to the challenges of manufacturing composites. He understands how to bring customers, stakeholders, and plant personnel together to find innovative solutions to manufacturing and operational challenges.
